The Middletown Fire Department is committed to providing fire prevention services to the community. These services include:
The Middletown Fire Department was formed in 1922 with a Chief and five call men and the 300 gallon combination pumper housed on Paradise Avenue. Since its first year with 8 fires attended, the department has grown in men, equipment, and duties. Three full time men were added between 1942 and 1953 to make a force of a chief and three permanent men with seven men on call to assist in fighting fires.
The equipment consists of 1 triple combination 500 gallon combination pumper with 800 gallon tank, and a 1000 gallon reserve tank truck. In 1952, 132 fires were attended by the department. Much of the built-up section of the Town is covered by the fire hydrant system, and as the Newport Water Works extends its water mains into Middletown, more hydrants are being added by the Town Council at the recommendation of the Fire Chief.
In 1952 the voters approved a two-way radio system installed in conjunction with the Newport County Fireman's League which alerts county departments to all fires. Under this mutual aid system, Newport, the Navy, and Portsmouth can cover any Middletown fire within ten minutes.
At the 1953 annual financial town meeting, the taxpayers approved the purchase of land at Wyatt Road and Berkeley Avenue as a site for a combination fire and police headquarters and appointed a committee to study plans for a suitable building.
At the present time, the department consists of 32 active full-time members including the Chief, 1 Fire Marshal, 1 Fire Inspector, 1 Training Captain, 4 Line Captains, and 24 firefighters. All members are licensed EMTs, with 18 being Cardiac level.
Department vehicles include 3 pumpers, 1 Ladder, 2 Rescues, 1 Special Hazards vehicle, 1 Tanker, 1 Brush Truck, 1 Rescue Boat, 2 Command vehicles and 1 Utility vehicle, all housed in the station located at 239 Wyatt Road.
