The primary focus of the Middletown Public Library is to provide public access to information. The Library contains a local collection of over 65,000 books, CDs, and video along with a collection of microfilm and magazines. The Library also provides direct access to 4.4 million items contained in the other public libraries throughout Rhode Island via the Horizon Information Portal. Those items can be requested either in the Library or remotely with Horizon. Through OCLC, the Library has access to the holdings of over 40,000 libraries across the world. Items requested from Rhode Island collections are usually received within three working days through our state-wide delivery system. Items that are in high demand may take longer.
The Library has about 13,000 active card holders from Middletown and makes local collections accessible to the other 440,000 card holders throughout the State of Rhode Island. The Library engages in cooperative agreements with CLAN, OLIS, LORI, and federal agencies that dictate many of the guidelines used to purchase and implement technology solutions and provide support for program activities.
The Middletown Public Library maintains public access computers for use on the Internet, public access to Microsoft productivity tools, and dedicated machines that support Horizon. In addition, the Library offers remote and local access to content rich full-text services with a valid library card.
