MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
Middletown Town Council
When: Monday night.
Where: Middletown Town Hall.
Absent: Councilwoman Terri Flynn.
Of note, the council:
- Approved a special event permit for East Bay Community Action Program to hold a “Molar Express” event for free dental visits for children 2-21 at Linden Park on Aug. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 8 am-5 pm.
- Okayed a special event permit for the town’s “Monday Night Music Series” at Second Beach from 6-9 pm on Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 for free music, food trucks and fire pits.
- Considered a request from Flynn to place the “Middletown Center” development at 600-740 West Main Road on the Nov. 8 ballot, an idea that had support among audience members who spoke. Council members said they appreciated the feedback, but having a ballot question was not the right course because it set a dangerous precedent. They also reiterated nothing was a done deal with the proposed development and the council would work hard to boost the amount of affordable housing and smart growth part of the project and try to create a project the community would be proud of for decades to come. Town Solicitor Peter B. Regan said given the existing memorandum of understanding, the item couldn’t go on the ballot without specific approval from the “Middletown Center” development team and the council.
- Reappointed James Gedney to the Conservation Commission.
Next regular meeting: Monday, Aug. 1 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
