SALUTE TO SUMMER CONCERT AND FIREWORKS

RETURNS TO NAVAL STATION NEWPORT

Naval Station Newport, RI – Naval Station Newport has selected a date and begun the planning to host its annual “Salute to Summer” concert and fireworks event, according to Bruce Katz, installation public affairs officer.

“The installation commanding officer and our Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department are extremely excited to be able to host this public event after it was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all the associated mitigations and restrictions to combat the virus,” Katz announced. “We are thrilled to be able to invite the public aboard the installation and celebrate community and partnership with our neighbors on Aquidneck Island and here in the Ocean State.”

This year’s event will be held Saturday, August 28, with gates opening to the public at 4 p.m. Authorized Department of Defense card holders are able to access the event beginning at 2 p.m.

The free, public event will feature performances by local bands and Navy Band Northeast.  There will be activities for children and food vendors on site for the purchase of snacks, meals and beverages. A fireworks display is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

“Parking and installation access information will be announced in future communications,” Katz explained. “Our first priority is to share the news of the event’s return and have community members save the date and make plans to join Naval Station Newport as we put on this marquee event after a one-year hiatus.”

Katz also shared event guests older than 16 years of age must be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID for entry to the base and recommended all attendees bring lawn chairs and blankets, as no seating will be provided for the general public by the installation.

Coolers, outside food and drink, pets, glass bottles, banners or signs of any type, fireworks, firearms and other weapons, defensive sprays (pepper spray) or chemicals, illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia, and drones are not permitted. Strollers and small bags such as diaper bags, totes, backpacks or handbags will be permitted and are subject to search.

Businesses and vendors interested in becoming sponsors or being part of the event can contact Liz Larcom at 401-841-3855 or visit www.navylifeNPT.com/sponsorship to learn more about opportunities to be part of this year’s “Salute to Summer”.
