Newport firefighters were out this morning along West Main Road, checking their fire hose adapters. Officials said Newport Fire uses a fire hose thread different than other departments, so an adapter is needed to tie into the hydrant system in Middletown.

Police are investigating a one-car accident that sent a red sedan over a retaining wall today at the shopping center at East Main and Valley roads. Police said they were called around noon and no injuries were reported. Ray's Towing removed the vehicle.

Emergency personnel were at a single vehicle accident on Berkeley Avenue by Wyndham Hill Road. Police said a truck went off the road and took out a pole and wires. The truck driver was taken to Newport Hospital. The accident is under investigation.
